Post by Teeka on Thu Jul 23, 2009 11:57 am

I actually just found out she's riddled with worms pale , we got her yesterday and took her to the vets, we just do not have the money to get her treated so we gave her back to the breeder.
It's horrible.. so now I'm looking for other puppies Sad

I'm thinking of a Bichon x Maltese as that was my old dog, but I want a Shih Tzu, too. Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad Sad

Im so sorry this happened but if she only had worms then its not that expensive to treat, I really hope the breeder gets her sorted !!!

How bad was the worms and what treatment would she have needed as all puppies need worming anyway Sad

I don't think you should take her back. The breeder is obviously not trustworthy if he hasn't even told you the breed.. and has negelcted to worm her, who knows what else.

I think you should speak to your Kennel Club and get a list of breeders that are trustworthy and then speak to those and see what litters are available. Also, save up some money so you have some behind you to cover worming, vaccination fees and any other unanticipated medical conditions.

You will need to check that the breeder is worming the puppies every 2 weeks up and you will need to carry on this process until they are 12 weeks old, then monthly until they are 6 months and then quarterly thereafter. This is SO important.

Here is the link for your Kennel Club:

    http://www.ankc.org.au/home/default.asp

Also, if your heart is set on a shih tzu.. speak to the breed club for a list of breeders also:

    Please keep us updated.

Well TBH you need to decide what your doing, this puppy needs a loving stable home and if you say you cant afford to treat her then it wouldnt be wise to take her back, The breeder should be sorting her out and paying for any treatment she needs, but saying that without knowing all the facts and going on what you have said so far then this breeder disgusts me !!!!!

Okay, I've decided to keep well away from the breeder.. Does anyone know about Bichons or have them? I know its the wrong forum. Wink

No I don't I'm afraid.. speak to the breed clubs for more information and do some research on the net, books etc. and decide which breed is for you first.

You really must do research first to find the best breed for you, Good luck in your search.

Oh what a shame this has happened after getting your hopes up. The poor wee pup should have been wormed regularly, what a shame for them. If the breeder hasn't even been doing that, I'd worry about what else may have been neglected and I'm afraid I probably would have taken her back too.
It's one thing having unexpected medical costs (it happens with all dogs) but I'm afraid I wouldn't knowingly take on a pup that (would seem to be) more likely to have problems.
Hopefully you won't let this bad experience get you down, just keep on the look out, and do your research before comitting to a pup. At least now you know an important question to ask! (which I certainly didn't when I got my first shiddie, I was just lucky that she was from a lovely breeder!)
Oh, and I also meant to say... welcome

I'm absoloutly appauled. Did I mention for dinner he feeds her Weetbix and COWS MILK?!

    Sigh.. crying

<img src=" longdesc="61" /> that's just awful! What a shame for the person who's puppy died, and what a shame for Teeka...that's up there with one of Stu'd cousins who went to see a litter of Labradors, and for dinner they got the left over cakes from the bakery the owner ran!
It really does make you crying crying
